UNIVERSAL STUDIOS LAUNCHES “DARK UNIVERSE” AS A SHARED UNIVERSE FOR ITS MONSTERS with JOHNNY DEPP, JAVIER BARDEM, TOM CRUISE, and MORE

Universal’s Monsters are finally getting their own shared universe, AGAIN! Why do we say again? Because back in the early days of black-and-white, some of Universal’s monsters actually appeared in films together (does anyone remember Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein?). This time it’s called DARK UNIVERSE (notice the play on words: “Universal” and “Universe.” Well done). Check out their awesome promo video here:

I’m not gonna lie — this REALLY gets me excited. I absolutely LOVE the Universal monsters. Here’s what IGN had to say:

The studio revealed today that the shared universe, which kicks off with The Mummy, will also include Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s Monster, in addition to The Mummy’s Tom Cruise (Nick Morton), Russell Crowe (Dr. Jekyll), and Sofia Boutella (The Mummy). The next film in the shared universe will be Bride of Frankenstein, directed by Beauty and the Beast’s Bill Condon for a February 14, 2019 release.

From left are Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s monster, Tom Cruise as soldier of fortune Nick Morton, Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man and Sofia Boutella as the Mummy.

So far, however, there is one GLARING omission in this list: The Creature From the Black Lagoon. He’s my absolute favorite!

Aaaaah, I love that Creature. This past week, Syfy wire had a great Sneak Peek: First Look at Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Watch it here.

In this era of super-hero team-ups and shared universes, Universal’s Dark Universe is a pretty cool addition to the pond. So, as we see it, we now have the following competing universes: The Marvel Cinematic Universe (both film and TV), the DC Cinematic Universe (both film and TV), the Warner Bros./Legendary big-monster shared universe (Kong and Godzilla), and now, Universal’s Dark Universe.

Here are a couple more flicks we can’t wait to see rebooted:
