CON GUY OPINION: RIHANNA IS JUST STUNT CASTING AND COULD SINK THE ‘BATES MOTEL’ BATTLESHIP

No hate here. We think Rihanna’s songs are great (if you’re into that sort of thing). But c’mon, give us a break — the announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con that Rihanna has just been cast as Marion Crane, the pivotal character in the movie Psycho who met her fate in the shower at the hands of a demented (and cross-dressed) Norman Bates, is just stunt casting, plain and simple. And bad stunt casting at that — Rihanna helped sink one Battleship (Leonard Maltin compares the movie to Transformers, calling Battleship “a movie for people who found the Transformers series too intellectually challenging.”)–so why is Carlton Cuse letting her sink another one?

The big (but not unexpected news) is that YES, this is the last season.

If you haven’t seen the most recent season, then this is your SPOILER WARNING….SPOILER WARNING. Watch here:

Carlton Cuse and company said they cast Rihanna once they found out she was a fan of the show……Um, okay….why not get an actress with credible acting skills — not some pop star who will bring nothing to the show besides notoriety….why don’t we just go ahead and add in Justin Bieber as Norman Bates? (actually…….naw)

Bates Motel has thus far been a hallmark of excellent acting  — better than almost anything else on TV — and graceful, beautiful storytelling. The actors/creators are so accomplished, and we’ll get to see their directing skills at work this fall.

According to most reviewers of the movie ‘Battleship,’ Rihanna’s “acting” was serviceable–which meant it wasn’t the only torpedo that sunk that movie, but we’ve come to expect so much more of Bates. This is just a blatant publicity stunt. Lady Gaga on American Horror Story was bad enough, but at least she was somewhat good (I guess). We’ve come to expect so much from this show — if you haven’t been watching, you’re missing out!

Here’s hoping this Battleship can stay afloat, especially for this last — and pivotal — season in the Psycho mythology. This is the season when Norman IS Norman. It’s gonna be one wild ride…. let’s trust Carlton Cuse to know what he’s doing.
