Here’s an awesome Halloween treat–Stan Lee’s Comikaze takes over the Los Angeles Convention Center this weekend, chock full with some of the best panels, guests and fan-favorites around. We’d call this “the little convention that could,” except for the fact that it’s not that tiny anymore, and now in its fifth year, it’s proving to be one of the better stops on the convention circuit. That said, here’s our picks for 9 things you just gotta’ do or see if you’re there this weekend.
ALL WEEKEND: The man, the myth, and the truly legendary, Stan “The Man” Lee will be on the floor available for signings and photos throughout the weekend.
SATURDAY: Signings by comics legend Todd McFarlane. His pencils and covers for Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man took that title to #1 and launched Todd’s career into comic book superstardom. Marvel eventually gave McFarlane a title that he solely could write, pencil and ink: Spider-Man. Spider-Man #1 shipped to stores in September 1990 and became the best-selling comic book of all time, selling more than 2.5 million copies.
SATURDAY: Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher, stops by to sign autographs. You won’t get a peep out of her about the new film, but this may very well be one of the last times that fans can catch this iconic actor before her “little film” opens up December 18.
SATURDAY: Greg Grunberg is J.J. Abrams’ lucky charm, appearing (if even briefly) in every successful (and not so successful) production from the Bad Robot director. Not only is he geeking out Heroes Reborn, but Greg has managed to squirrel his way into the next Star Wars film. This guy! Come on out for discussion and photos.
SATURDAY: Discuss all things Summer, with the actress who starred in Firefly, Arrow and Terminator. She’s a definite popular draw at fan conventions, and this one should be no different.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: It’s Uhura, the first lady of space travel, and, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King – “The first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a black woman in television history.” Nichelle Nichols subsequently co-starred in six blockbuster Star Trek motion pictures and is still in constant demand to appear before millions of “Trekkers” who keep the dream alive around the world. See here here all weekend!
SATURDAY: This group is the spawn of LA’s Improv Olympic West, a super-funny improv comedy club, and they’ve been featured at Gallifrey One, Stan Lee’s Comikaze, Strategicon, ConDor Con, and San Diego Comic Fest. These guys get around. Better get to this one early, because it’s gonna fill up fast.
SATURDAY: The Cosplay National Championships is probably one of the best things about this convention, and in our opinion, one of the top draws for fans. Pro and amateur cosplayers are competing to grab a piece of the $10,000 in cash and prizes in one of three categories: master, journeymen and junior. The proliferation of cosplay culture is really propelling events like this–so make sure to go see the competition. We’ll be there!
SUNDAY: William Shatner ain’t slowing down. Stick around Sunday to find out about this latest endeavor, William Shatner’s Man O War, a digital comic that combines animation, in-story sound effects, and a music soundtrack that really jacks the experience up to Warp 10. Moderated by Don McGuire.
