Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are lost in space in the first trailer from Passengers. When Hollywood’s two biggest and most bankable stars decide to get together, people pay attention. From a script that’s been floating around for 10 years, ever since winning a spot on the coveted Hollywood Black List, Passengers is shaping up to be one of the biggest — and most prestigious — blockbusters of the holiday season. Dropping on Christmas day, it will have to fight it out with that other giant sci-fi epic that will still be doing bonko business at that time, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Watch the trailer here:
Here’s what a number of major publications are saying about the trailer:
From WIRED magazine >>>
Passengers, which was directed by Oscar nominee Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), is a relative rarity in modern Hollywood: A big-star, big-budget studio movie that’s not based on a pre-existing comic book, YA franchise, or best-selling book (the script, written by Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts, has been floating around for nearly a decade).
Though much of the plot twists are being closely guarded, we know the action takes place on the luxury spaceship seen here in the trailer. Jim (Pratt) and Aurora (Lawrence) are en route, with 5,000 others, to a new colony when they’re awakened out of suspended animation too early. Judging from this new footage, it looks like they won’t have a ton of time for drinks at the bar (poor Robot Sheen!) as their ship appears to be going through some catastrophic malfunction.
The magazine picks its 6 favorite moments from the trailer – and makes GIFs out of them. They include: the awakening; the first date; the first kiss; the outer space jump; Michael Sheen’s robotic bartender; and a mission outside the ship. Check these out.
Part rom-com, part sci-fi adventure, the film looks like a cross between Guardians of the Galaxy, Silver Linings Playbook, and every sci-fi movie or television show ever that features cryogenic sleep.
Most trailers give teases at what’s to come making you guess the storyline, but for some reason, they’ve decided to spoon feed the audience, and it feels like we learn the entire plot and story in two minutes and 42 seconds. It’s like a watching a movie on Vine.
At one point prior to Sony’s involvement, Passengers had Keanu Reeves and Rachel McAdams attached along with Game Of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire helmer Brian Kirk. Before that, Reese Witherspoon was expected to play the female lead, and The Weinstein Company bought the script in a big deal at Cannes in 2012. However, producer Neal H. Moritz was tracking the project and when it became free, he brought it to then-Sony production president Michael De Luca.
