Mark Hamill isn’t known for being shy….we interviewed him once, and it took a whole 15 minutes before we could even get to our first question. That guy LOVES the fans. He LOVES Star Wars…and he LOVES talking….which may have just gotten him in trouble….. DO NOT READ THIS if you want to avoid potential spoilers….
This may be nothing at all, and we know we’ll get some heat for this one (“I can’t believe you were so dumb to fall for that,” etc) but apparently, while addressing a crowd this past weekend, the Luke Skywalker actor said this: “I finish Episode VIII, and then I’m out of work.”
Was that a mistake or is he trying to throw us off the scent? Misdirect? Or is he saying that the next film has his character following Han Solo into the great big Force on the other side? Is he done? Here’s a couple reports and opinions….what do you think?
With Star Wars: Episode IX already scheduled for May 23, 2019, the suggestion that Hamill will be out of work following the end of Episode VIII shooting is an odd one, leading many to read it as an implication that Luke Skywalker won’t make it out of Rian Johnson’s movie alive.
There’s at least a chance that Luke Skywalker isn’t going to survive through Episode VIII, and that qualifies as major Star Wars news. It seems unlikely someone as experienced as Mark Hamill would let something like that slip, unless it’s one of those sly, “I told you exactly what was going to happen” deals.
So how in the world are we supposed to take that statement? On the one hand, Mark Hamill could just mean that he’ll be temporarily out of work. We know that filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII passed the half way point about a month ago, meaning they could have as little as a couple of months left in the shoot. If Mark Hamill’s job is done on Episode VIII by the end of the summer of 2016, and with the release date of Episode IX not until the summer of 2019, it’s going to be some time before filming for that movie begins. We’d guess it will be more than a year before Mark Hamill would be needed for Star Wars: Episode IX.
Of course, Hamill has been quick to comment on his “possible” mistaken statement:
I meant "out of work" because #Ep8 is wrapping soon, OK? #DontOverThinkEVERYTHING #ParsingHamill #WaitForVIII https://t.co/5CIJ5Gqo99
— Mark Hamill (@HamillHimself) June 27, 2016
Hmmm, still seems kinda fishy. And probably not at all important….but it certainly caused a disturbance in the force, if even just a little one. Does anyone else have an info? We’d love to know.
