WAH WAH! ARE THE STUDIOS JUST BIG BABIES FOR PULLING OUT OF COMIC-CON BECAUSE OF “LEAKS”?

So, let’s get some perspective on this whole thing….early today (or yesterday), word leaked out that Fox was pulling out of San Diego Comic-Con because it didn’t want its “exclusive” footage being leaked online. Okay. We here at the Con Guy reacted swiftly, calling the leakers “idiots” who ruined Comic-Con….and I’m not gonna lie: most of us here still believe that. (IDIOTS!)

FOR THE RECORD, we are 100 percent against pirating. Stealing. It sucks, it’s low, and it hurts the industry that creates films we love….moving on…..

HOWEVER, there is another side to this story…Yes, there are idiots on the other side! We here at The Con Guy aren’t all in agreement. As a matter of fact, there’s a big argument going on as we drink our late-night beers. And here’s the other opinion: The Studios are being big ole’ babies, whining about stuff that actually HELPS their stinking movies. I mean, let’s be honest: Comic-Con is a collection of geeks, nerds and SUPER-FANS who LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these films. When these fans see exclusive footage, they geek out and usually have to change their underwear. That’s why studios bring footage – to stoke the fan fervor.

So when Fox announced they were pulling out of Comic-Con because of leaked footage, some had to ask out loud: ARE YOU FRAKIN’ SERIOUS? You show footage to a room of 6,500 people and you get all bent out of shape because one of them posts the footage from their iPhone? Give me a break! ESPECIALLY since your biggest superhero film to date, FOX, is a result of leaked footage.

Are the studios being honest? Are they pulling out because of leaks, or are they just trying to save a buck. The presentations can be expensive (even though San Diego Comic-Con doesn’t charge them for participating). Some (including some on our team), think that the leaks aren’t the offending thing — it comes down to budget, plain and simple.

What are we talking about? Just read the following from A List Daily:

“20th Century Fox funded test footage to get an idea of how a Deadpool movie would work, but it was never meant for public consumption. It was eventually shown during a San Diego Comic-Con panel, but soon after, it made its way onto the Internet through an illegal leak [shown above]. As a result, the footage went viral, and fans went crazy over the idea of seeing a Deadpool movie. The concept was so successful that much of the scene made it into the movie and has been featured in numerous promotional trailers (like the one below). 20th Century Fox funded test footage to get an idea of how a Deadpool movie would work, but it was never meant for public consumption. Ryan Reynolds, the actor portraying the character, spoke about the leak during an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. “I’ve been trying to get (the movie) made for 11 years, which is crazy,” he explained. “We developed the script six years ago, wrote this fantastic script, it leaked online, Deadpool fans went nuts for it.” He explained how the studio funded the footage and its leak, and the effect that followed. “Here’s the thing, the fans freaked out and overwhelmed Fox, and Fox basically had to greenlight the movie. The problem is the footage was owned by Fox, so it was kind of illegal…I know that one of us did it.” He then joked he was “70 percent sure” it wasn’t him.”

C’mon, Fox, listen up! Ryan Reynolds believes that the “leak” is responsible for the AWESOME movie that is Deadpool. And I gotta ask: how many of us think it was really a leak? Or was it intentional? Either way – IT WAS BRILLIANT!

Warner Brothers had a similar reaction to the Suicide Squad footage leak from last year. We gotta say, we saw the footage, and IT LOOKED AWESOME! Which is the point we’re trying to make: If studios are so afraid of confidential, damaging footage being leaked, then DON’T SHOW IT. When you come to Comic-Con, bring the stars, bring the director, bring SOMETHING that stokes the fans. YES, exclusive footage is AWESOME. But just start accepting that fact that anything that’s presented in Hall-H WILL ABSOLUTELY MAKE IT ONLINE….that said, use that to your advantage. Stop crying in your beer and start utilizing this moment to it’s fullest advantage. Hall-H is a rarified experience — only a select few films ever make it in there. DON’T WASTE THE MOMENT!

And just as a reminder, here’s how we ended our “Idiots Ruined Comic-Con” article yesterday:

But we gotta ask: ON THE OTHER side of this issue: Isn’t the whole purpose of Comic-con to get publicity? To get the word out? Why are the studios bitchin and moaning, when all they really have to do is build their presentations to be something that CAN be pirated and shared and publicized….seems to me there are idiots on both sides. Bring out the stars and show footage that “ain’t too exclusive.” No one will ever know. Use Comic-Con to promote your film and stop bellyachin’ about leaks. Instead of showing footage that can be “damaging” to the film’s brand/marketing (really? sounds like BS to me), just create a presentation that you WANT TO BE SHARED….don’t get me wrong. This doesn’t excuse the idiots who’ve ruined the studio presence at the Con….but I just think the studios should outsmart the “momma’s boys who never leave their parents basement.” Use them.
