THE DUDE From The Big Lebowski Is Coming Back

Word broke out this week that Jeff Bridge’s beloved THE DUDE character from the cult classic Coen Bros film THE BIG LEBOWSKI would be showing up. And by “broke out,” we mean, Jeff himself let the cat out of the bag that with a tweet. See it here:

What does this mean? Is a sequel forthcoming? Although that would be great (SO STINKIN GREAT!), most people are speculating that because of the February 3 date listed in the short video, this tweet is promoting an upcoming Super Bowl ad… in case you’re not a sport fan–or your head is buried deep in the sand–the Super Bowl is on February 3.

Here’s what NERDIST had to say: “Bridges’ tweet includes the words “Can’t be living in the past, man,” which I’m sure has to do with whatever product is being sold and not a for-real movie. Also, if the Coen Bros and Jeff Bridges were re-teaming for a real sequel to The Big Lebowski (almost surely called The Bigger Lebowski), there’s no way they’d be able to keep it a secret all the way until teaser time. So, as fun as it might be to think about another feature-length adventure of everyone’s favorite goldbrickin’ Don Henley hater, it’ll probably just be a commercial.”

ESQUIRE also had a take on this news: “Does The Dude, His Dudeness, or El Duderino need a sequel? Probably not. Sometimes it’s best not to try and recreate something so perfect to begin with. The Big Lebowski, which originally was released in 1998, has become a Coen brothers cult classic. The clip is likely just Bridges resurrecting his (greatest?) character for a quick Super Bowl spot (which lands on February 3), but it’s nice to know after all this time that Jeffrey Lebowski is still out there living his truth. Perhaps bowling with a little Lebowski? To quote The Stranger, “I don’t know about you, but I take comfort in that. It’s good knowing he’s out there, the Dude, takin’ ‘er easy for all us sinners.” We’ll see you February 3, El Duderino. We’re waiting.”

Perfect. The DUDE definitely abides.
