WHERE’D THAT TIE FIGHTER GO? …. TRAILER FOOTAGE SHOWS SCENES THAT ARE NOT IN ‘ROGUE ONE’

Have you seen Rogue One yet? If not, then you might want to wait until you do before you read this article. We’ll try to be as non-spoilery as possible, but please note we are discussing parts of the film that just opened this weekend on its way to a probably $150 million-plus opening.

What we’re mainly discussing is the fact that it seems the trailer showed many scenes that are not actually in the final film. Many eagle-eyed fans have spotted some obvious (the tie fighter) and not-to-obvious (running battle scenes) that are substantially different than the awesome trailers that dropped earlier this year. Check them out here:

Here at the Con Guy, our biggest disappointment is that we didn’t get to see that epic showdown between Jyn Erso and the tie fighter that was facing her down atop that super-tall Imperial tower. In the film, we see Jyn walk out on that catwalk, but the anticipated tie fighter showdown never happened…. Collider had some good insights into this.

Don’t get me wrong — I’m sure the changes were made to improve the pacing / ending / plot / whatever of the film. Still, we’re not the only ones talking about it. According to Slashfilm, the differences between the trailer and the film that is currently in theaters can probably be attributed to the huge reshoots that were, allegedly, done to “fix” the super-dark tone of the film.

In fact, the first Rogue One teaser trailer is comprised almost entirely of footage that wasn’t in the finished film. Some of it is completely different, while other parts are alternate takes and altered dialogue. Iconic lines that were part of the marketing campaign (like “I rebel!”) are nowhere to be found in the completed film. Heck, even the imagery of Stormtroopers patrolling in knee-deep water used in most of the poster and billboard advertising isn’t in the finished film…The curious part of me wonders what Rogue One was like before the reshoots. What was changed in the process? We might not know the answers to these questions for a while, but I think, looking back at the marketing, that we can find some clues in the unused shots from the trailers. From Vulture
One of the biggest differences between the first glimpses and the final film is a purely visual one, and it has to do with Forest Whitaker’s head. In the first teaser, his anti-Imperial terrorist character, Saw Gerrera, is bald; in the movie, he has the wildly angled curls of a graying Yahoo Serious. It’s possible that these were scenes that were supposed to take place earlier in the timeline, as well….In a trailer, we also hear Saw lament what has happened to his beloved Galaxy. “The world is coming undone,” he says in the inexplicable accent Whitaker chose for the character. “Imperial flags reign across the Galaxy.” In the movie, we’re left to just assume things are bad without having to hear it from a grizzled old terrorist. Looking back at the film’s vast swathes of promotional material potentially tells a very different story, with key scenes and action sequences highlighted in Rogue One’s various trailers now tellingly absent from the final cut… Read full article here >>>

We know, we know…. in the end, does it really matter? Maybe not. But it would be interesting to know if the the film actually had a different ending at first. Or if the fates and actions of some of the principle characters may have been different. Some early interviews from the cast seem to suggest as much. Maybe they’ll show up in the “outtakes” of the Blue-ray. We can only hope!
