THE NEW MCU! MARVEL CINEMAX UNIVERSE: MARVEL COMIC’S “SCARLET” IN DEVELOPMENT AT CINEMAX

In the wake of Marvel’s huge success on Netflix–including the blood-soaked Daredevil and the pushing-the-boundaries sensation Jessica Jones–Marvel is taking the next step up the “adult” ladder with its very first foray into Cinemax territory with Scarlet. Word out of the ATX TV Festival today is that Marvel Comics writer and creator Brian Michael Bendis let the cat out of the bag.

Marvel/Icon title Scarlet is headed to television. It is currently being developed as a series at Cinemax. Marvel Comics writer and creator Brian Michael Bendis, who co-created Scarlett with artist Alex Maleev, let the news slip today that the property is being developed as a series at HBO. Deadline has confirmed that the project indeed is in development but at HBO sibling Cinemax. Bendis, co-creator of the Marvel character Jessica Jones and the long-running Marvel/Icon title Powers, both which have been adapted for television, spoke of the potential Scarlett TV series at the ATX Television Festival in Austin.

The comic centers around young woman named Scarlet Rue from Portland who rebels against a corrupt society and ends up starting a new American revolution in the process. The series often breaks the fourth wall in that the protagonist talks to the reader.

Scarlet is under Icon Comics, an imprint Marvel launched in 2004 for more mature comic books. Other Icon comics include Kick-Ass, and The Secret Service which have both been adapted to film.
